I don\u00b4t think that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>AI<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>would replace pathologist<\/span>s<\/span>, instead<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>will improve their performance in the clinical practice. But pathologists who\u00a0<\/span><\/span>won\u00b4t<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>adapt to AI<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>will be replaced by<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the ones who will.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Major companies like KODAK or Blockbuster refused to adapt to the digital technology decades ago, and because of that wrong decision, they went bankrupt and no longer exist. Nowadays, Artificial intelligence\u00a0(AI)\u00a0is being part of the\u00a0Health Care system, with large money investments and mayor human resource because of the potential results that are astonishing, surpassing even the human results at some point.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The question that not only pathologist\u00a0but\u00a0also\u00a0many other health care\u00a0professionals\u00a0have\u00a0is this one: \u201cAre we going to be replaced by AI?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I made a Survey in 2017 in twitter if Pathologist were ready to adapt to Artificial intelligence as part of their clinical practice.\u00a0And\u00a0more than 50% answered that they were not ready. Two years after (in 2019) made the same survey and more than 50% answered that\u00a0they were\u00a0ready. I made a third survey last year in 2021 with that same question and more\u00a0than\u00a080% said that they ready for AI!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only this is a comforting response, buy if you see the number of publications regarding AI in digital pathology\u00a0have grown exponentially\u00a0in the last decade even with the creation of journals\u00a0dedicated exclusively to talking about this topic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A more detailed survey\u00a0was made\u00a0to 718 responders in 91 countries divided in 5 sections\u00a0(1) AI as a topic in pathology, (2) previous exposure to AI as a topic in general, (3) applications of AI in\u00a0dermatopathology, (4) feelings and attitudes towards AI\u00a0and (5) knowledge of technologies and self-reported demographics. Part of the results showed that\u00a0respondent age did\u00a0not affect the general attitude\u00a0towards AI. Only 6.0% of the respondents agreed\u00a0that human pathologists\u00a0will\u00a0be replaced by AI in the near future. Among the whole group, 72.3% agreed\u00a0that AI will improve\u00a0dermatopathology\u00a0and 84.1% think AI should be\u00a0part of medical education.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a great interest that my colleagues\u00a0get\u00a0familiarized with this subject and let them know how it can improve their clinical practice. That is why, when I have the chance in the meetings that I\u00b4m invited I\u00a0emphazise\u00a0in the great benefits that AI offers. For example, in November 2021 I had two\u00a0conferences\u00a0.\u00a0One was called\u00a0<\/span>\u201cArtificial Intelligence in Digital Pathology\u201d\u00a0and the other one was a\u00a0conversatory\u00a0with\u00a0La\u00ebtitia\u00a0Launet\u00a0(ESR7)\u00a0called\u00a0\u201cHistopathology Image Analysis: Medical vs Informatics\u00a0Perspective\u201din\u00a0Keralty\u00b4s\u00a0IA Health symposium\u00a0<\/span>Artificial intelligence: a transformation opportunity for health management<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As can you see, the importance of adapt to this inevitable chapter of pathology with AI is necessary. I don\u00b4t think that AI would replace pathologists, instead it will improve their performance in the clinical practice. But pathologists who won\u00b4t adapt to AI will be replaced by the ones who will.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
